Styling Tips When Furnishing Your Living Room

If you’re planning to buy furniture, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed, unsure and confused, especially when it comes to taking the right decision for your rooms. There are a lot of choices today in terms of style, color as well as material and it can be really difficult to know what will work and won’t in your space!

I’m Mariam Aboulfetouh founder  “Interior Flavor” to offer you some purchasing and styling tips that could help you decide and start decorating your space. Today we’re focusing on tips when furnishing your living room area.

1. Pick a Starting Point and Take Measurements of Your Place

Make a list of what you think you’ll need and keep a copy of your master plan on your phone. A typical example would be your living room.

Where do you start with the design? I regularly look for bigger items like the sofa first. These are going to be the main focus of the room so you want them to look good as well as be comfortable. Next I usually look at textile: area rugs, and accent pillows.

2. Maintain a Neutral Color When It Comes to the Biggest and Most Expensive Pieces in Your Room

Bring pattern and color to the smaller elements like pillows, artwork, rugs, and accessories. This way it will make it much easier if you want to give your space a makeover you will just need to change the cushions and accessories.

3. Buy Furniture That Serves Multiple Purposes

Make the most of every room in your crib. Always keep practicality in mind when you’re designing a room. You may need to consider the day to day usage of the room. Your room should be practical above everything else.

4. Lighting, Lighting, and Lighting

Proper lighting makes work a lot easier and changes the mood of a place. Without proper lighting, the interiors you have designed will be dull. Lack of proper lighting affects the perceived size of the room. If the room doesn’t have much natural light, add a mirror to the opposite wall to reflect more light.

5. Use Different Texture to Keep Your Décor More Interesting

You’ll want to mix different textures in your decor. This creates interest and makes it eye-catching rather than looking boring or plain. Mixing texture is always a great idea.

6. Keep a Minimum of 15 Inches Between the Coffee Table and the Sofa

Because no one likes to bump their knees on the coffee table when they’re about to lounge on the couch. Also, making sure the distance between the coffee table and the sofa is adequate is crucial if you plan to have a place to comfortably put your mug on when you’re done with your morning coffee. It also gives off the best look for your living room.

7. Choosing your TV Unit

Be sure to consider the width of your screen when choosing your unit. We recommend getting a unit that is at least a few inches wider than your TV.

In conclusion, don’t be afraid to think outside the box and ask for advice.  It’s your house so make it’s unique to you. If you’re facing trouble narrowing down colors, look for inspiration. I prefer to look on Instagram and Pinterest for interior design ideas. Save a bunch of images, then go back and see if there’s a trend amongst your favorites. This will save you time and money.

Don’t be afraid to use the interior designing service in furniture stores since you can get some brilliant ideas from them. If your budget allows, ask an interior designer to come over and get their opinion. A lot of designers offer a consulting package where you can get instant ideas with minimum cost. Interior designers will also open your eyes to new and different ideas that you might have never thought of. Keep in mind that your home should tell the story of who you are and be a collection of what you love.
